Termites Killed This Tree

Well, maybe they didn’t.  I would imagine that there was once a tree where this stump lies.  Then the termites had their way with it, and the tree collapsed at its breaking point revealing the tunnels, and holes that these wood eating bugs created within the trunk of the tree.

Personally, I loved the texture so I immediately got up close and took a photograph.  To me, it looked almost like a bird’s eye view of a mountain range… save for the perfectly round holes.  Yeah.  The image of a landscape from above doesn’t quite fit, but it’s all right.  It always happens when one takes a photograph of something for what it could be and not of what it already is.

At any rate, I converted the photograph to black and white and then added a little bit of brown tint.  It just didn’t feel right keeping it plain black and white.  I cannot explain why.

Taken with Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi.
Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM at 95mm.
Shutter Speed: 1/60s.
Aperture: f/5.6.
ISO 100.
Edited with Adobe Photoshop CS4.
