Maple Leaves

I took this photograph because of how isolated the maple leaves were on this branch.  There are twigs that clearly ought to have leaves on them but as one can see, they’re not on the tree.  What made the leaves grow in such a way?  Did someone pluck the other leaves from the tree for some reason?  I guess I’ll never find out.

Notes:
Taken with Canon EOS Digital rebel XTi.
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II.
Shutter Speed: 1/640s.
Aperture: f/7.1.
ISO 100.
Edited with Adobe Photoshop CS5.
